Our story...A year after we purchased a Baskin Robbins franchise (which we recently sold so that we
can concentrate solely on our cart business), we decided to offer catering and event services. We
purchased a large trailer cart (for $12,000) and immediately started getting calls to bring it to festivals
and office parties. However, the indoor parties presented a problem because the cart would not fit
through normal doorways. So we shopped around for a smaller cart. We also wanted it to fit into our
minivan because we didn't want to have to deal with where to put another trailer and besides, we
already had a nice lettered van and thought it would be real nice if we could store it inside the van
when it wasn't being used. Any ice cream store owner can tell you, space is limited.
After a detailed search, we found out that the cart we wanted didn't exist. So we invented it. After two
years of research and development and actually using the cart ourselves in a variety of catering jobs,
we had a cart that not only met our needs but also met the strict health department standards in South
Carolina. During our R & D, we also discovered that ice cream carts didn't need to be so
expensive...$8,000 to $13,000 is a lot of money, especially if you need more than one cart. We were
able to build ours for a fraction of the prices of other carts.
When other ice cream store owners started hearing about our innovative and inexpensive cart, they
asked us to build one for them. And so Magnolia Carts was born.
We've kept our prices low because our overhead is low. And by the way, catering and event services
added 15 to 20% to the annual sales at our Baskin Robbins. And because each added sales dollar
through catering does not have any added fixed costs such as rent and utilities, it is a highly
profitable source of revenue.
